FBI data for the Spokane Police Department shows 1,627 vehicle thefts in 2023, 1,209 in 2024 and 814 in 2025. Thefts haven't stopped: KXLY reported 174 cars stolen in Spokane by mid-April 2026, with downtown reporting the most.

Kia and Hyundai models were a particular target. In 2023, 218 of them were reported stolen in the city and county, and SPD and the sheriff's office formed a task force that September. SPD offered free steering wheel locks paid for by the Washington Auto Theft Prevention Authority, and WATPA's 2025 report says Kia thefts kept falling. The same report says budget cuts have left the Spokane Auto Theft Task Force with half of one detective and no state-funded prosecutor or crime analyst.

Recovery depends on investigators, and Spokane has fewer of them for vehicle crime than it did. Titan doesn't wait for a recovery: when it's armed, the car won't start or move, and you get the tamper alert while it's still where you left it.

FAQ

Vehicle theft in Spokane: your questions.

Is car theft going down in Spokane?

Yes. FBI data for the Spokane Police Department shows 1,627 vehicle thefts in 2023, 1,209 in 2024 and 814 in 2025, a fall of about 50% in two years. Cars are still being taken: KXLY reported 174 stolen in the city by mid-April 2026.

How do I report a stolen car in Spokane?

Call 911 if it's happening now. If the crime is no longer in progress, call Crime Check at 509-456-2233. SPD's online reporting covers thefts, vehicle prowls and tampering, but stolen vehicles aren't on its list, so use Crime Check.

Are Kias and Hyundais still a target in Spokane?

Less than they were. In 2023, 218 were reported stolen in the city and county, and WATPA says Kia thefts kept falling in 2025 thanks to software updates, dealer fixes and steering wheel locks. Check your VIN for the anti-theft update on the NHTSA recall site.

Who investigates auto theft in Spokane?

SPD and the Spokane County Sheriff's Office formed a task force in September 2023. WATPA also funds a Spokane Auto Theft Task Force, which after budget cuts has half of one SPD detective dedicated to vehicle crime and no state-funded prosecutor or crime analyst.
