FBI data for the Renton Police Department shows 2,002 vehicle thefts in 2023, 1,191 in 2024 and 654 in 2025. Renton's police chief said most categories of violent and property crime, for adults and juveniles, had dropped by the end of 2024 compared with 2023.

Renton saw the Kia and Hyundai trend up close. In March 2024 a King County Sheriff's Office helicopter followed a Hyundai Sonata, reported stolen by a Renton resident, from Renton to Tukwila until it crashed into a pole at Southcenter Mall; police arrested two of four suspects aged 14 to 16. Renton police also formed a Violent Crime Unit aimed at violent crime and repeat offenders, and by November 2024 the city had 10 juvenile stolen vehicle cases for the year, compared with 66 in 2023.

Car prowls are still part of the picture: in one January 2025 night, at least 60 cars were hit across eight Renton locations and four guns were taken. A break-in becomes a theft when a key or fob is left inside. With Titan armed, the car won't start or move even then, and you get the tamper alert while it's happening, not the next morning.
