Work Truck Theft: How to Lock Down the Yard After Hours

At 6 p.m., the yard is full. Trucks are backed in, ladder racks loaded, toolboxes stocked for tomorrow's jobs. By 6 a.m., one of them is gone, along with the tools inside it, and the crew that needed it is standing around waiting for a plan B.

For service businesses, contractors and utilities, a missing work truck isn't just a vehicle claim. It's a crew that can't work, appointments that get cancelled and customers who start looking elsewhere.

Pickups Are Prime Targets

Full-size pickups have been fixtures on the most-stolen lists for years. In NICB's 2025 vehicle theft figures, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ranked fourth with 16,764 thefts and the Ford F-150 ranked seventh with 10,102. Those are the same trucks that fill fleet yards across the country.

Overall theft is down, falling 23% in 2025 to 659,880 vehicles. But a falling national number doesn't help much when it's your truck, your tools and your schedule.

After Hours Is the Weak Spot

Most fleet losses happen when nobody's watching:

  • Overnight and on weekends, when trucks sit in yards, at job sites or outside employees' homes.
  • During after-hours misuse, when a vehicle is driven when and where it shouldn't be.
  • When the routine slips. Security that depends on someone remembering at the end of a long day will eventually be forgotten.

Fences and cameras help, but they record a theft rather than stop it. A tracker tells you where the truck went, if the signal isn't jammed.

Prevention That Runs Itself

Titan stops unauthorized starts and gives fleet managers the telematics to run the day. The core idea is simple: the yard should lock itself down.

  • Scheduled arming. The fleet arms itself after hours and on weekends. Nobody has to remember.
  • Easy daily use. Drivers disarm by encrypted Bluetooth remote or app. Managers can override from anywhere.
  • Tamper and movement alerts. Know immediately when an armed vehicle is tampered with or moves, by app, email or SMS.

Telematics for the Rest of the Day

Prevention covers the hours you're closed. During working hours, the same platform gives you:

  • Trip history: routes, stops and times for every vehicle.
  • Speed alerts for risky driving.
  • Yard geofences with entry and exit alerts for yards and depots.
  • Battery health, so you catch weak batteries before a no-start costs a shift.

Already running a telematics provider? Titan is complementary. It adds the prevention layer that tracking can't provide.

Rolling It Out Without Disrupting Work

  1. Review. We look at your fleet, yards and current telematics to decide where Titan adds the most.
  2. Integrate. Integrations are planned around shifts, at about 45 minutes per vehicle, at your yard.
  3. Configure. Arming schedules, yard geofences, groups and alert recipients are set up with your team.
  4. Support. Managers and drivers are trained, with ongoing Titan support.

If your trucks are your business, after hours is when it's most exposed. See how Titan protects fleet vehicles, or tell us about your fleet and we'll show Titan running on vehicles like yours.

Running excavators, skid steers or other yellow equipment? That needs a different approach: see our prevention-only program for heavy equipment.
